When Should You Go?
The honest answer: it depends what you want. June to September is the classic season – every road is open, Deosai is a carpet of wildflowers, and the weather in Hunza and Skardu is close to perfect. But it is also when everyone else goes. If you can travel in October, do it: the crowds vanish, hotel prices drop, and the autumn colors in Hunza and Ghizer are frankly ridiculous. April and May are beautiful too, with blossom season in full swing, though high passes like Babusar and Deosai may still be closed.
How Long Do You Need?
A week gives you one region done properly – say Hunza and around. Ten days lets you combine Hunza with Skardu. Two weeks means you can add Ghizer, Astore or Fairy Meadows without ever feeling rushed. What we always tell guests: distances here are measured in hours, not kilometers. A hundred kilometers can take four hours, and the journey is usually spectacular enough that you will not mind.
Getting Around
You can self-drive the Karakoram Highway in a normal car as far as Khunjerab, but side valleys – Kutwal, Khaltaro, Rama in early season – demand a jeep and a driver who knows the road. Local drivers are worth every rupee; they read the mountains, the water crossings and the weather in a way no map app ever will. NATCO buses run daily from Rawalpindi to Gilgit and Skardu if you are on a budget.
A Few Insider Habits
Carry cash – ATMs exist in Gilgit, Aliabad and Skardu but they run dry on busy weekends. Buy a local SIM (SCOM works best in most valleys). Respect photography etiquette, especially around women and homes. And build one empty day into every itinerary, because landslides happen and the best plan in the mountains is a flexible one.
